A statement from the Holy See Publishing Friday evening says Pope Francis’ breathing conditions have worsened after isolated bronchospasm. The Pope was immediately launched with non-invasive mechanical ventilation that he was responsive.
Vatican News
The Holy Father experienced an isolated episode of bronchospasm this afternoon after a morning of alternating between respiratory physiotherapy and prayer in the chapel. This caused an episode of vomiting, and he inhaled the sudden worsening of his breathing condition.
The Holy Father was immediately exposed to bronchial aspiration (to clean the airways), subjected to non-invasive mechanical ventilation, improving oxygen levels.
He is always vigilant and aware, and is working with therapeutic treatments.
Therefore, the prognosis remains protected.
In the morning he received the Eucharist.
The statement, provided by the Holy See Press Office on Friday evening, came as the Pope continues to treat bilateral pneumonia at Gemeri Hospital in Rome. He was confirmed on Friday, February 14th, following a respiratory infection.
Approximately 24-48 hours are required to be able to assess the clinical status of the Pope following an isolated episode of bronchospasm.
Thanks to non-invasive mechanical ventilation, gas exchange values have been reported to have returned to levels similar to those before the episode.
