The NCAA announced Thursday that the board of directors has voted to update the Association of Transgender Student-Athletes participation policy. President Trump’s presidential order It prohibits transgender girls and women from competing with sports teams that match their gender identity.
On Wednesday, Trump signed an order stated by federal law against sex discrimination in schools. Title IX, It is interpreted as banning transgender girls and women from participating in women’s sports. Institutions that do not comply with are putting the federal funds they receive at risk, Trump said.
The College Sports Association’s Management Committee updated its policy the following day.
“The NCAA is an organization consisting of 1,100 universities from all 50 states collectively registering over 550,000 student-athletes. Clear, consistent, uniform eligibility criteria will help students to today’s student-athletes instead of patchwork. We strongly believe in providing optimal service, NCAA President Charlie Baker said in a statement.
Baker said in December, testifying before Congress on the issue before Congress that he knows “less than 10” trans athletes out of the over half a million student-athletes controlled by the NCAA.
The College Sports Association’s updated policy states that women’s sports competition is limited to student-athletes who are assigned women only at birth. The student-athletes also state that they assigned women at birth when they started hormone therapy (such as testosterone). Student-athletes assigned at birth are permitted to practice with a female team and receive benefits such as medical care during practice, the policy says.
Under this policy, student-athletes can compete and practice in male sports, regardless of their birth or gender assigned by gender identity.
The NCAA said the updated policy will be effective immediately for all student-athletes, regardless of previous eligibility.
Within hours of his appointment, Trump I signed an executive order The federal government does not use terms such as gender identity, nor does it recognize “two genders, male and female.”
He also focuses on orders Transgender Service Members limit Gender-affirming health care.
