New Orleans – Birds killed beasts, hindering history in the process, becoming one of the most dominant Super Bowl performances of all time.
The Philadelphia Eagles throw the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 on Sunday at the Super Bowl 59 at the Caesars Super Dome, denying the Chiefs being the NFL’s first “3-Pet” Super Bowl champion.
The Eagles did not allow the Chiefs to be on the brink of history. Or, the final Super Bowl between the teams two years ago, Philadelphia’s 38-35 loss had an impact on their performance. Philadelphia played the equivalent of snatching pens and drawing on the Chiefs’ forehead to write their own version of history.
Chief quarterback Patrick Mahomes runs into every game of his life, and the Eagles’ defense deserves credit for making him tremble from the start. Josh Sweatt led the team with a 2½ bag, while Milton Williams had two. The team’s six sacks were once from the Super Bowl record for most sacks in the game. Williams’ strip sack in the fourth quarter he recovered was an exclamation point for his defensive efforts to command.
Mahomes had two touchdown passes in the final three minutes, making the game appear closer than he actually brought it closer.

Having set the highest record ever for rushing yards during the season during the game, Saquon Barkley didn’t unleash a breakout run as he did all the postseason. He finished with 57 rushing yards on 25 carries, but caught a team high six passes for 40 yards. It was his first time marking without more than 100 rushing yards in the game since week 15 of the regular season.
The chiefs faced the prospect of becoming the first team to be locked out on the world’s biggest stage, just before solidifying themselves as the team’s most prolific dynasty. Kansas City started 0-8 on their third down, with Xavier’s worth catching the team’s first touchdown, leaving the rest of the third quarter with 34-6 in 34 seconds.
As he headed down the field, Mahomes had no one to throw. Travis Kelce (four receptions, 39 yards) was non-factor. His first catch was three minutes left in the third quarter, and the game has already been decided. And the lack of rushing offense was one of several factors that allowed the Eagles pass rusher to tee off with Mahomes in all games.
Mahomes appeared at the stadium on Sunday, wearing the Eagles green tint. But it was the Eagles’ defense that made him feel green.
Eagles rookie cornerback Cooper Dejan celebrates his 22nd birthday Sunday, after his Eagles teammate fired Mahome on two previous plays for a touchdown midway through the second quarter. I returned the intercept that was made 17-0.
After two series, Zach Boun intercepted Mahomes – feeling pressure again – brought the ball back to the Eagles at the Kansas City 14-yard line, with 1:45 left in half. Hurts found AJ Brown, wide open with a 12-yard touchdown two times later, and the blowout was 24-0, fully empowering with 95 seconds remaining until halftime.
In the first 30 minutes, the Eagles completely choked up the defending champion. The Chiefs had one first down on their first drive at halftime. Kansas City attacked for 23 yards after Mahomes was fired three times. Philadelphia, meanwhile, had 179 yards and ran almost twice as many plays (39-20) and owned twice as long. The 24-point lead was the steepest margin at halftime in Super Bowl history.
The better for the second half hasn’t changed much. Again, the Eagles plundered Mahomes in succession plays to force a punt.
Both teams punted following the first offensive possessions of the game. Brown’s offensive pass interference penalty did not benefit the story the NFL tried to dispel a week, as the Eagles converted fourth and second, and the Chief received priority treatment from the judges. However, Brown thrusts his left hand into the helmet of Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffy, causing the flag.
The Eagles were on the other side of the flag when they flipped the Dallas Gaedart in the third and fifth, but were shot by McDuffy to the helmet to keep the drive alive. The score then began as Hurts found Jahan Dotson with a 27-yard touchdown to the 1-yard line, with Philadelphia patented “Tush” with a 6-point lead remaining in the first quarter with 6:15 left. Push was performed.
Kicker Jake Elliott made all four field goal attempts (48, 29, 48, 50) to close out Philadelphia’s score.
The Chiefs are an undisciplined penalty, especially Nick Bolton’s penalty for unnecessary roughness to nail Berkley backwards, especially after the Eagles are not buckled after returning to the end of the first half.
Much more Prophiladelphia crowds lasted all day long with “Big Easy,” where the “Eagles” began their chant more than two hours before kickoff. These fans also downplayed the famous Chiefs all day long. From the player introduction, the cheerleaders are bombarded as they lower the escalator to the field level. By the fourth quarter, they had laughed at the “Tomahawk Chop” Chiefs fans doing “Tomahawk Chop” to support the team.
And they chanted on New Orleans night as their second champion in eight seasons.
