Approximately 19 media outlets participated in the first World News Day event in Toronto in 2018.
This year, more than 800 news organizations and media support associations participated, representing hundreds more news brands from more than 100 countries.
They began working with independent journalists to share the campaign in print, online, on social media, and at specially organized events.
Below is a snapshot of efforts shared with us from around the world.
Reuters is running abbreviated versions of video ads and digital banners on its app this week.In Brazil, more than 60 media organizations from major companies are participating, including: Globoand Folha de Sao Paulo – to many small local newspapers. For these small newsrooms, World News Day is a window into the world of international journalism, providing context for their challenges and an opportunity to demonstrate their value to audiences.In Ireland, irish times will publish an editorial and all Irish newspapers will run campaign advertisements on the same day. They used the opportunity to call on the government to support professional journalism, saying “a wave of misinformation on social media threatens democracy.” Deputy Prime Minister Michael Martin backed the #ChooseTruth message and called for public support for their favorite media brands. “It’s time to look at the facts.”

Arena Holdings commemorates both South Africa’s Heritage Day and World News Day by commemorating the life and legacy of Black Consciousness Movement leader Steve Biko and his close relationship with The Paper’s Editor-in-Chief Donald Woods. The documentary “Power of the Word” about friendship was premiered. The Daily Dispatch exposed the apartheid government’s attempt to cover up the cause of Biko’s death. Commissioned by Arena Holdings, the premiere will be followed by a panel discussion exploring the #ChooseTruth theme.
