Mankato – Shooting and defense led Madelia to a 13-point comeback over a sleepy eye at the Tomahawks’ crossover boys basketball game on Saturday at Bethany Lutheran College as the Blackhawks won a 76-72 victory I did.
Madelia went 55-42 in the second half, but they put it together for their recent victory.
“Coach Vanhee just told us one possession at a time, and that’s what we did.” Hayden Jones of Madeleia said. “Good defense, get down, get shots, get a bucket, go back, do great defense again. Keep working, keep holding forced sales, lots of energy for us It helped to produce it.”
Madelia’s head coach Jeff Vanhee said one possession mantra at a time is at the forefront of this year’s Madelia season.
“We had to stop.” He said. “Our motto was one property at a time, and it’s really our program motto, one property at a time. Earn ownership, do your best, compete, compete, compete And compete for its ownership, defense, competition, competition, competition, and its ownership. And we did. We compete for all ownership, perform in attacks, knock some shots. It’s down.”
Jones was on the frontline of Madelia’s offense, scoring 28 points on eight three-pointers while giving out five assists. Kaydon Firchau had 21 points and 8 assists, while Josiah Demaris added 16 points. The entire team made 16 3-pointers. This allowed the team to rely on every season.
“It will be a threat to all of us.” Jones said. “As soon as you put Kyle (Piechu) down low, it’s so huge to kick it out and knock on a big shot.”
Sleepy Eye was led by Landon Wendinger with 25 points, 18 rebounds and seven blocks, while Brayden Hederscheidt received 19 points, 8 assists and five rebounds. Eric Rozano and Robert Romberg each scored 13 points for the Indians.
Sleepy Eye took a 7-3 lead early in the layup from Wendinger, but Firschau’s 3-pointer tied the game with a nine. The team fought throughout the first half. A sleepy 6:48 timeout left in half saw the Blackhawks with a 24-22 lead. Wending threw a half-later dunk to give him a sleepy eye 37-35, but Madelia tied it halfway forward with a Tate Becker layup.
Sleepy Eye controlled early on the first, going up 51-40 after a layup from Heiderscheidt, and Sleepy Eye stretched to 55-42 on a layup from Lozano and played Madelia Timeout at 11:02 .
After the team traded layups, Jones began his comeback with a three-pointer. Wendyer scored on a layup, and Becker came in on the other side of the court. Madelia chipped on the lead before heading for the 13-0 run, setting fire to a pair of free throws from Firchau and finishing with a 3-pointer from Demaris, moving up to 69-65.
Sleepy Eye fought to get back into the game, but one of the final three-pointers from Firschau sealed Madelia’s comeback and victory.
