President Donald Trump has granted a month’s tariff exemption to US automakers complying with the US-Mexico-Canada agreement, the White House said Wednesday.
Big Three automaker Stellarantis thanked the Trump administration for giving the Trump administration a month’s exemption from the 25% tariffs that came into effect this week, saying “we share the president’s purpose in building more American cars.”
“We thank President Trump for this decision,” Stellantis said in a statement Thursday.
“We share the President’s purpose to build more American cars and create lasting American jobs,” it added. “I look forward to working with him and his team.”
White House press director Karoline Leavitt announced Wednesday that US automakers complying with the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) have received a month’s exemption from Trump administration tariffs.

“We spoke to the Big Three automaker,” confirmed Leavitt. “We will provide a one-month exemption for all cars coming through the USMCA.”
“Mutual tariffs will still come into effect on April 2, but as per the company’s requests relating to the USMCA, the president is exempt from them for a month, so they will not be at a financial disadvantage,” Leavitt said.
