CHAMPIONS — Illinois outside hitter Raina Terry was one of seven players to earn All-Big Ten First Team honors, out of a total of 25 who earned unanimous All-Big Ten First Team honors on Wednesday. There was only one person.
Terry is now a three-time All-Big Ten First Team player, earning the same honor in 2022 and 2023. The 6-foot-3 outside hitter, who is in his fifth year, led the Illini with 486 kills during the regular season. (3rd in the Big Ten) and 55 aces (also 3rd in the Big Ten). She also had 200 digs and 68 blocks as the University of Illinois advances to the NCAA Tournament, with a first-round game against Northern Iowa in Louisville, Kentucky, on Friday at 3 p.m.
The other five players unanimously selected to the All-Big Ten First Team are middle blocker Andy Jackson of Nebraska State, libero Lexi Rodriguez of Nebraska State, outside hitter Sarah Franklin of Wisconsin State, and outside hitter Sarah Franklin of Minnesota State. They were outside hitter Julia Hanson, Penn State outside hitter Jess Murzik, and Oregon outside hitter Mimi Collier. Franklin was named Big Ten Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.
Penn State earned two individual awards, with setter Izzy Stark named Big Ten Newcomer of the Year and Katie Schumacher-Cawley named Big Ten Coach of the Year.
Nebraska sophomore Bergen Riley, the younger sister of Illinois setter Ragen Riley, was named Big Ten Setter of the Year for the second consecutive season. The Cornhuskers’ Lexi Rodriguez was also named the inaugural Big Ten Libero of the Year. Rodriguez was previously named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 2021 and 2023.
Illinois’ Ashlyn Philpott was also named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team. The 6-4 middle blocker had a team-high 124 blocks and had 211 kills in the regular season. The Greenville, N.C., native ranks ninth in the entire Big Ten in total blocks and tied for 18th in blocks per set.
