DALLAS — Target and youth mentoring organization Big Brothers Big Sisters teamed up for a back-to-school shopping event in South Dallas Saturday morning.
Students gathered at the Target on LBJ Freeway for the opportunity to get all the resources they need to have a successful school year ahead.
“Students come to class showing off their style and feeling proud of themselves, and we’re grateful to Target for helping them feel like they can be their true selves,” said Jenny Harper with Big Brothers Big Sisters.
The organization’s mentors were given $100 gift cards from Target to buy school supplies and new clothes.
Makayla Diles and Rachel Hefner were one of 100 Dallas “big” and “little” couples who attended the shopping event.
Dills says this will help prepare them for sixth grade.
“I actually need more school supplies than I thought I would. I have to make sure I have everything I need for school, like colored pencils and stuff,” she said.
Hefner has always been committed to ensuring his children are successful both in and out of the classroom.
“I’m trying to teach her not only the value of education but the importance of finding something that she wants to learn,” Hefner said. “Makayla is a very smart girl, so this experience is great to give her a chance to get what she needs.”
This marks the first time Target and Big Brothers Big Sisters, along with youth leadership organizations, will host a back-to-school shopping event in the DFW Metroplex.
“We know this store provides a great shopping experience for families in the area,” Target’s Joe Cardillo said.
Seeing how big an impact it has had on South Dallas families, it’s clear this won’t be the last.
“It’s just a blessing that all the kids can come here and get their school supplies,” Diles said.
