The bank capture comes the day after Sudanese troops celebrated the seizure of the Presidential Palace.
The Sudanese Army claims it has seized control of the country’s central bank’s main headquarters from the Paramilitary Speedy Support Forces (RSF) as it continues to advance in the capital.
Army spokesman Nabil Abdallah said in a statement to AFP news agency on Saturday that the soldiers “were eliminated hundreds of militia members who tried to escape from their pockets in central Hartzm.”
The bank’s acquisition comes the day after the Army seized control of the Presidential Palace with a serious military victory.
However, RSF retaliated on the acquisition on Friday, launching a drone attack that killed three journalists and several army personnel.
Army sources told AFP that RSF fighters on Friday fled to the Al Moglan building, the area west of the Palace’s Housing Bank and the Business HQ.
In the area, paramilitary forces have posted snipers across the Nile and in high-rise buildings overlooking the ministries in Omdurman city and central Khartoum.
However, the battle for the government and the financial district has been able to strengthen the retention of the army against the capital and provide great advantages in conflict.
In a report from Khartoum, Hiba Morgan of Al Jazeera said the Army had made “steady profits” over the past few months.
“They have acquired positions from the rapid support forces in the northern part of the capital and the eastern part of the capital, but there are RSFs and there are still areas in the western part of the country, especially those,” Morgan said.
“In effect, if this is currently split into two parts, the Army will control the East, Northeast and Southeast, while the RSF controls the western and southwest parts of the country,” she added.
Since April 2023, the army led by Army Abdel Fatta al-Burhan has been in a continuous conflict with the RSF, led by former deputy commander of Burhan, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.
However, two years of conflict has put the country in a deep humanitarian crisis, killing tens of thousands of people and displaced over 12 million people.
