Stanley, the drinkware brand that exploded in popularity on social media, has recalled approximately 2.6 million travel mugs due to potential “burn hazards,” the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced in a release Thursday. .
The recall specifically applies to all Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs sold in the U.S., which have lids made of polypropylene, the commission said. , was found to loosen when exposed to “heat and torque”, posing a risk of burns.
The agency said the tumblers range in size from 12 to 20 ounces and come in a variety of colors, including white, black and green.
Stanley has received over 90 reports of lid removal issues worldwide. Thirty-eight of the cases were related to burns, 11 of which required medical attention. Sixteen of the complaints and two of the injury reports were in the United States.
“Consumers should immediately stop using recalled travel mugs and contact Stanley to receive a free replacement lid, shipping included,” the commission said.
The drinkware brand posted instructions on its recall website on how to identify the model and replace the lid.
The mugs cost between $20 and $50, depending on the model, and were sold at retailers including Amazon, Target, Walmart, and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
CNN along with Stanley reached out to these companies for comment on the nationwide recall.
Stanley has been around for more than a century, but in 2020 it underwent a brand refresh with the goal of attracting women as a potential new consumer group.
The company soon launched new drinkware in endless colors and designs and turned to trusted influencers on social media to spread the word.
