The gunman who fatally shot a longtime Santa Monica College employee has died after a chase that ended in a standoff in El Segundo, the Santa Monica Police Department said.
Police say Davon Durell Dean, 39, a Santa Monica College employee, shot and killed a colleague on campus Monday night. The victim, whose name has not been released, is hospitalized in serious condition. Authorities said Dean fled the scene after the shooting.
The suspect’s vehicle was spotted in El Segundo around 3 p.m. Tuesday. After a short pursuit, law enforcement conducted a PIT maneuver on Dean’s vehicle and was able to stop the vehicle. A standoff ensued and the suspect was found dead with a gunshot wound in his car, police said.
As a result of the confrontation, access to Aviation Boulevard between 124th Street and El Segundo Boulevard was closed. NewsChopper 4 was over the scene, and at least four police cruisers and three armored vehicles blocked off the black sedan.
Officials have not said when the street will reopen.
In response to the on-campus shooting, Santa Monica College announced it will provide counseling and mental and emotional support services to affected students, faculty and staff. A motive for the shooting has not been released.
