St. John’s University continues to grow US News & World Report Education rankings of the top universities in the country.
Just released Best Colleges in 2025 Guidebook US News & World ReportSt. John’s University rose to 152nd on the list of national universities, up from last year’s ranking of 163rd. This is the highest ranking for St. John’s University since the 2019 edition was published in fall 2018.

US News & World Reportof Best Colleges in 2025 This edition uses 17 key indicators to evaluate the academic quality of national universities, including retention and graduation rates, student-faculty ratios, income and debt, and standardized tests. In addition to the type of institution and geographic location, US News Editors also ranked colleges in other groups, including Best Value Schools, Top Public Schools and Best Colleges for Veterans.
St. John’s was named a “Top Performer in Social Mobility” and ranked 35th among public universities (up from 42nd). Only one other private university in New York and one other Catholic university in the United States rank higher on this criterion.
The university also received high marks for “Best Value Schools” (up from 191st to 183rd), “Best Colleges for Veterans” (up from 113th to 106th) and “Best Undergraduate Psychology Programs” (up from 264th to 229th).
US News The rankings compile 10 overall rankings of nearly 1,500 four-year, bachelor’s degree-granting colleges and universities in the U.S. and compare colleges with schools with the same academic mission.
This year, the publication slightly changed its methodology by removing graduation rates for first-generation students from the formula. US News The editors included outcomes related to first-generation students, but decided to stop considering this metric this year because the data they looked at wasn’t consistent enough across institutions.
According to US News & World ReportMost schools surveyed are continuing to report data, with 78.1% of the roughly 1,500 ranked colleges and universities returning statistics for spring and summer 2024, up from roughly 79.9% last year. This includes 99 of the top 100 ranked national universities and 96 of the top 100 ranked national liberal arts colleges.
