CHASING — Oak Glen’s Addison Wells and St. Clairsville’s Kaylee Shafer chase to get the ball. – Kailyn Hughes
CLAIRSVILLE, ST. — Senior Night in St. Clairsville between the host Red Devils and the visiting Oak Glen Golden Bears.
Both teams feature solid backlines with capable keepers.
Entering Tuesday’s matchup, the Red Devils had conceded just 1.3 points per game. Their opponents were close behind, conceding 1.6 points per game.
Throughout most of regulation, neither team had a legitimate scoring opportunity. That lasted until about 3:20 in the second half.
Sophomore Elizabeth Morgan stole the ball on the left side and sent a pass up the middle to classmate Emma Gasbar.
Gasbar took a few dribbles to his right and fired a shot upwards from the 15-yard line, just stopping the outstretched hand of Cameron Michaud for the eventual game-winner.
With the win, the Red Devils improve to 10-4-1 heading into tonight’s final regular season game at John Marshall.
St. C. recently earned the top seed in the East Region 1 tournament. They await the winner of Wednesday’s East Liverpool vs. Cambridge Section opener. Either the Potters or Bobcats will face the Red Devils on Monday, October 21st.
The hosts led nearly 1-0 in the first half, and at 34:15, sophomore Ashlyn Rednik hit a hard line drive toward the net, but it hit the right post and went harmlessly to the opposite side of Michaud. It rebounded and the defense alerted and cleared it. ball.
That was the only legitimate scoring opportunity for either team in the first half.
Oak Glen made several changes on corner kicks and direct kicks, but was never in position to get a shot on St. C’s keeper Kiya Kaier. Kiya Khair made just two saves after a 0-0 tie with Highlight, making it his second consecutive shutout. I promoted John Glenn on October 1st.
It was St. Clairsville’s best season since finishing 14-3-3 in 2021, when the Devils lost to rival Big Red in the postseason.
The Golden Bears (6-10-3) return to New Manchester on Thursday to take on Edison for a chance to gain a little momentum before the postseason begins. A matchup with cross-county rival and OVAC 4A champion Weir is looming.
In two games against the Red Riders this season, Oak Glen lost both by close 2-0 decisions.
