CARSON, Calif. (Reuters) – San Diego FC remembers on Sunday with stunning MLS Cup defending champion La Galaxy 2-0 in a victory that was supported by the intense support of fans who traveled north to Los Angeles I enjoyed my debut to do so.
Winger Undersd Layer scored both goals on the expanding side as a charged-up fan hit the drums and delivered a deafening chant on a warm night in the Southern California city of Carson.
A longtime observer of the San Diego football scene said he was surprised at how quickly the city took to the team.
“I feel passionate,” former MLS and national team player Stuart Holden became a Fox Sports analyst and told Reuters in the game.
“I played with the US national team at Qualcomm Stadium and got 30,000-40,000 per game, so I always knew San Diego was a soccer town.
“So when the MLS was announced, I was excited, but I didn’t expect any reaction they would have regarding the amount of season tickets they sold and the amount of fans they traveled here today.
“This will be a fun rivalry between San Diego and the LA team. This is only good for the league.”
MLS’ 30th team has arrived in its 30th season, with San Diego supporter Brian Swalberg saying he is excited that his hometown city will finally get the opportunity.
“I’m a San Diego sports fan,” Swalberg said.
“I didn’t really cheer on at a local level. I’ve always been concerned about the World Cup, Concacaf, but I feel that San Diego is a great sports city, but what made them worthy of was that It may not be.
“We have a local club right now and we want to be a part of it.”
San Diego will play their first competitive home game against St. Louis City on Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium.
