Republicans have suspended investigations related to the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, leading disagreements about how Republicans can move forward.
Johnson hopes to stop stopping the previous Jan. 6 committee investigation, including former GOP MP Liz Cheney, and narrow its focus, according to three sources familiar with negotiations. But GOP MP Barry Loudermilk, who was tapped to helm the probe, would prefer a broader power of attorney supported by some White House officials. President Donald Trump told Johnson before he took office that he hoped the investigation would be a priority, CNN previously reported.
The tapered range also prohibits investigations from preparing security before the attacks and considering ways to improve security at the Capitol in the future, sources added.
The behind-the-scenes disagreement that stuck negotiations is part of why Johnson announced in January’s new selection subcommittee for Loudermilk has yet to begin work, sources said.
Johnson’s office did not respond to requests for comment. CNN also reached out to Loudermilk for comment.
In the final assembly, Loudermilk focused on the committee before January 6th and its working products. The House GOP report culminated by recommending that Cheney be investigated by the FBI.
But if Johnson had his own way, Loudermilk wouldn’t be able to pick up his work from where he left off. As Johnson likes, the new investigation into Laudermilk under the House Judiciary Committee will limit the topics the subcommittee can look into. That focus will shift until January 6th to subjects like previous federal investigations based on the Department of Justice. They are trying to identify who placed two viable pipe bombs near the Republican and Democrat National Committee headquarters. And then a source of secret human in Washington, DC on January 6th – a paid FBI informant. Both regions have already been seen by the DOJ’s Trump Alliance, which includes Attorney General Pam Bondy and FBI Director Kash Patel.
The controversy over how to handle the investigation speaks to the broader sector that will last in the Republican Party over how to handle the January 6th topic. Many Republican lawmakers want to move on, but Trump himself hasn’t finished in the past and continues to target previous January 6th committee members as top targets.
Georgia GOP Rep. Mike Collins, who mentioned the violence who attacked Congress as a “peaceful grandmother,” spoke about Loudermilk’s investigation.
Meanwhile, Arizona GOP MP Juan Ciscomani, who represents the swing district, told CNN he doesn’t know that his colleagues continue to investigate January 6th. This indicated that this was not a top priority for the entire meeting.
“I didn’t even know the effort to make this honest with you,” said Ciscommani.
When it comes to how Johnson handles January 6th, it’s not the only way Johnson would stall.
Johnson has not hanged plaques to honor Capitol police officers in response to the January 6 attack, despite former President Joe Biden signing a law requiring such plaques in front of the Capitol.
Given President Trump’s first two months of chaoticism, the impasse on how to move forward in the Loudermilk investigation remains largely under the radar.
But it will never be noticed.
Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, who supports efforts to declare Trump not involved in the rebellion, told CNN that Republicans still need to investigate allegations about the FBI, as the Jan. 6 committee, security has expired.
“We definitely need to consider that,” she said.
