Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has suffered a high ankle sprain, but the Kansas City Chiefs “don’t think it’s bad,” a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday.
The diagnosis was made during tests conducted on Monday. The Chiefs will evaluate Mahomes throughout the week to determine if he has a chance to play Saturday against the Houston Texans.
The Chiefs will then play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day, completing three games in 11 days.

Mahomes was ejected midway through the fourth quarter of the Chiefs’ 21-7 win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday after being hit while throwing an incomplete fourth-down pass.
During that play, Mahomes was dragged from behind by Cleveland defender Dalvin Tomlinson and was also hit high by Mike Hall Jr.
Mahomes left the game 19-of-38 for 159 yards and two touchdowns. According to ESPN Research, Mahomes was attacked on several pass attempts and was pressured 21 times.
Mahomes has a history of ankle injuries, suffering a similar injury in Week 1 of the 2019 season against the Jacksonville Jaguars. But perhaps the most memorable moment came during the playoffs of the 2022 season. Mahomes injured his ankle in a divisional-round win over the Jaguars and then played through the pain to help the Chiefs defeat the Cincinnati Bengals, win the AFC title, and defeat the Philadelphia Eagles. Carson Wentz finished the game for the Chiefs, and the Chiefs improved to an NFL-best 13-1.
