ID card deadline
It’s been a long time coming, but there are only a few months left until the STAR ID deadline for those who want to use it to fly, AL.com’s Heather Gunn reports.
The REAL ID Act requires state identification cards to meet higher security requirements when used for official federal purposes, such as for domestic flights. While there are other forms of ID you can use that already meet the requirements, such as a U.S. passport, the STAR ID, as it is known in Alabama, is an upgraded version of the state-issued ID. You’ll know you’re compliant by the gold star in the top left corner of your driver’s license.
When applying, you will need four documents to prove your date of birth, social security number, and address. The Alabama Department of Law Enforcement website has a long list of acceptable documents. Think about what works. A certified birth certificate, a Social Security card, a voter registration card with your current address, and a mortgage loan agreement with your current address should satisfy the license bureau agent.
You will need a STAR ID to board flights after May 7th.
baptist leaders
The new president of the American Baptist Convention grew up in the city of Phoenix, AL.com’s Greg Garrison reports.
Pastor Boise Kimber has served First Calvary Baptist Church in New Haven, Connecticut since 1986. He traveled to Birmingham on Monday night to be officially given his new title at the 16th Street Baptist Church.
The American Baptist National Convention is the largest black denomination in the United States, and Kimber said he wants to focus on missions and evangelism during his term.
Former Tide player’s worries
Former University of Alabama and NFL defensive tackle Marcell Dareus, who is remembered by University of Alabama fans for helping the Tide win in the 2010 national championship game, will join Hoover, according to AL.com’s Carol Robinson. He was arrested and charged with domestic violence.
Police said a woman who identified Dareus as her boyfriend said that during the argument, Dareus pushed her to the ground and hit her with a metal object, breaking her windshield.
Dareus turned himself in to the Jefferson County Jail.
Smoked sausage, anyone?
Before you completely lose faith in the federal government, note that at least it appears to be in favor of smoked sausage.
It’s no secret to keep smoked sausages. A grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development allows us to benefit even more.
The $400,000 will go toward Conecu Sausage’s second manufacturing plant, which is expected to bring 50 jobs to the Andalusia Industrial Park, AL.com’s Heather Gunn reports. The City of Andalusia is investing $80,000 in the project.
Conecuh Sausage is based in Evergreen.
In numbers:
$750,000
This is a proposed settlement of a lawsuit filed after the 2019 Birmingham police shooting.
