LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – In an age where holiday shopping is done online and at mass retailers, shopping at small businesses is often overlooked. But small businesses may be the ones finding the perfect item for their loved ones this holiday season.
First held in 2010, Small Business Saturday has become an important day to show appreciation for the small businesses that are the backbone of many downtowns across the country.
“Small business shopping is so unique because not only do you get to see all these beautiful decorations and storefront windows, but you get to meet the people who come here every day,” said La Crosse Downtown Main Street Community Engagement.・Director Kathleen Peelhop said. Said.
In 2023, $17 billion was spent in small businesses on Small Business Saturday. According to the National Retail Federation, 64.4 million people are expected to shop at small businesses this year.
“It’s definitely an increase of about 25% or 30%,” River City Hobbies manager Eleanor Barr said. “It was really, really busy yesterday. It’s great to see a non-stop surge of customers. It’s great to see so many people coming down.
According to the Small Business Association, the total reported U.S. small business spending since the annual Small Business Saturday was an estimated $201 billion. For shoppers, it seems like the small things that add up to these big numbers.
“It’s a more personal setting. You really get to know the people who work here one-on-one. What they’re passionate about. What they sell, what products they sell, what the management does.” You can really connect with the people themselves,” said Sarah Cochran, a shopper participating in the transaction. “I just think it’s more fun. I’m good at scrolling, but I prefer this. You get to touch the product, try it on, and see if it really suits you. I also like supporting local,” said fellow shopper Anna McKay.
While it’s very convenient to order online and have your items delivered, many people still prefer the cozy environment of their local corner store. We believe small businesses provide a better vacation experience.
According to the National Retail Federation, 72.3 million people will take part in Cyber Monday deals on Monday.
