BOULDER, Colo. — Shedur Sanders woke up early Friday morning to win a national award and set Colorado’s all-time single-season passing record.
The senior QB, who was named the recipient of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award before the game against Oklahoma State, entered the game needing 40 yards to pass Coy Detmer’s 28-year-old record of 3,527 yards.
Sanders got there with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Rajontay Wester in the first quarter.
This was Sanders’ 31st touchdown pass of the season, surpassing the school record set last week against Kansas. Sanders connected with Travis Hunter for an 11-yard TD, scoring No. 32, and the Buffs took a 21-0 lead into halftime.

Detmer’s record was set in 1996, when Rick Neuheisel coached the Buffs, and he finished the season at No. 8 in the AP Top 25 with a 10-2 record.
The Unitas Award, given to the nation’s best quarterback, could be the first of many awards for Sanders.
Before joining his father’s team as the Buffaloes’ starting quarterback at the University of Colorado, Schedeur starred at Trinity at Cedar Hill, where Dion also coached. During his senior season, Shedeur threw for 3,702 yards and 43 touchdowns, leading Trinity to its third straight TAPPS Division II state title in 2019.
Hunter, on the other hand, is considered the favorite to win the Heisman. Earlier this week, coach Deion Sanders expressed frustration that the two-way defensive back/receiver wasn’t on the final list for the Jim Thorpe Award, which goes to the nation’s best defensive back. .
