The visiting Grand Forks Central Knights jumped out to an early lead in the first half of the game, and the Minot North boys basketball team had to work to close the gap, but on Saturday, Dec. 28, the Sentinels were at home. They recorded a 67-58 victory. Nonconference action to conclude the 2024 portion of the 2024-2025 season.
With both teams scoring slowly in the opening minutes of the game, the Knights regained momentum faster than the Sentinels and held a 21-9 lead with 10 minutes remaining. Grand Forks Central had seven fouls at this point, so the hosts had the free throw advantage.
The Sentinels stuck to their game plan and began to chip away at the 12-point deficit, with the Knights leading 28-26 going into halftime.
With just two points remaining, Minot North outscored GF Central 41-30 in the second half to win by nine points.
Minot North went to the free throw line 17 times in the game and made 12 of them. GF Central took seven shots from the charity stripe and made five.
Both teams made 11 3-point shots. Minot North only needed 25 attempts compared to GF Central’s 36 attempts. It was a huge advantage for the Sentinels as they shot 44% from the field compared to just over 30% for the Knights.
Minot North went 11-of-26 from 2-point range, while GF Central went 10-of-26. The Knights had the statistical advantage over Minot North, scoring 12 points off turnovers and 24 points in transition. Grand Forks Central had the numerical advantage in deflections and steals, while Minot North had the advantage in defensive rebounds and blocks.
The Sentinels had four players score in double figures and eight scorers in the game, with Tamari Carter leading Minot North with 14 points. Kaiden Helm had 13 points and Brayden Brickley had 12 points in the game. Camden Orforth scored 11 points in the win, becoming the fourth player to score in double figures.
Treydon Bachmeyer had eight rebounds for the Sentinels, and Helm also added eight rebounds.
With the win, Minot North improves to 2-3 overall and Mandan will travel to Minot to compete in the Sentinels’ next Western Dakota Association (WDA) contest on Friday, Jan. 3 at Minot North High School.
