WATFORD CITY – The Minot North Sentinels boys soccer team continues its journey through history with a string of firsts each week. This week, the team won an away game. It was the team’s second win, but the first time the Sentinels have won by a goal.
The Watford City Wolves were tied with the visitors at 0-0 after the first half. The second half started in the same way with both the home and visitors battling it out in the middle of the field. Nine minutes into the second half, sophomore Logan Ovitt passed to freshman Jayden Marshall, who found the back of the net to give Minot North a 1-0 lead.
The teams remained deadlocked on defense for another 25 minutes. With five minutes left in the game, eighth-grader Jace Hoagland threaded the ball through fellow eighth-grader Jackson Gass for his second goal of the game and the Sentinels took the win, 2-0.
Minot North sophomore Griffin Waldo made four saves in the game, and the Sentinels had 12 shots on goal in the win.
In their first win, the opposing team won by a score of 1-0 after the ball bounced into the net and was scored as an “own goal”. Their 2-0 win against Wolves was the first time the team had scored a goal in their victory.
Ovitt remains the Sentinels’ current points leader in Western Dakota Association (WDA) play with four points scored. Emerson Reese is second with three points from two goals and one assist. Gavin Waldo has two points from an assist, while Maliki Baldwin and Jaeden Marshall each have one goal this season.
Waldo has faced 96 shots this season and recorded 64 saves. Macklin Kelly has faced 28 shots in relief and recorded 22 saves. Brantley Robinson has faced eight shots and recorded four saves.
Minot North (1-7-0, 2-9-0) will visit Bismarck High (3-5-1, 3-5-1) on Thursday, Sept. 12, before closing out the week by hosting Western Dakota Standings top team Jamestown (9-0-0, 9-0-0) on Saturday at Sentinels Stadium.
