A shooting occurred early Saturday morning at military personnel at the entrance to Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, a source familiar with the situation told NBC News.
A base spokesman confirmed there were no injuries or threats to the base.
San Antonio Police Sergeant Washington Moscoso said guards at the entrance gate to the training building heard several gunshots.
After the incident, armed security was increased as a precautionary measure.
Just before 5 a.m., a sedan pulled up outside the same gate and shots were fired again at the guards, Moscoso said.
Security forces opened fire on the gunman, who then fled in a car with another person in it, neither of whom appeared to be military personnel, the sources said.
Moscoso added that after additional security forces arrived on the scene, several Air Force personnel opened fire on the suspect vehicle.
“Through the investigation, evidence was found indicating shots were fired from the location of the suspect’s vehicle,” he said.
It is not yet known how many rounds of gunfire took place or what the motive was.
The base posted a warning on Facebook, saying the main gate to the Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland-Chapman Training Annex would be closed “until further notice.” About three hours later, the base announced the gate had reopened and normal operations had resumed.
The FBI has referred all tips to the San Antonio Police Department, which is leading the investigation and has officers on the scene. Moscoso said the investigation is ongoing.
