SEOUL, South Korea — South Korean technology giant Samsung Electronics said Tuesday that co-chief executive Han Jung-hee has died of cardiac arrest. Han was 63 years old.
Han will be responsible for Samsung’s consumer electronics and mobile devices division, while co-CEO Young Hyun oversees the chip business of South Korea’s largest company. Han died at the hospital Tuesday while treating cardiac arrest, a company spokesperson added that a successor has not yet been decided.
Samsung Electronics stocks remained flat in morning trade.
Korean companies have been falling in revenues and stock prices in recent quarters after falling behind their rivals in advanced memory chips and contract chip manufacturing, which enjoy strong demand from AI projects. Samsung has also handed over the crown of the smartphone market to Apple.
Joining Samsung Electronics nearly 40 years ago, Han built a career in the television business. He became Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics in 2022. Han was also one of the company’s board members.
He chaired Samsung’s shareholders meeting last week, and he and other executives were burned by shareholders after the company failed to get on the artificial intelligence boom.
In semiconductors, Samsung is lagging behind SK Hynix with HBM chips, where Nvidia and others rely on AI graphics processing units.
“First and foremost, I sincerely apologize for not meeting your expectations of recent stock performance. Over the past year, we have not been able to properly address the rapidly evolving AI semiconductor market,” Han said.
He was scheduled to attend Samsung’s launch event on Wednesday for new appliances.
