One of the most unexpected wins of Week 2 was the New Orleans Saints, who traveled to Dallas and stunned the Cowboys.
By the fourth quarter, the only drama remaining was whether the teams could work together for a skorigami, a game ending with a never-before-seen final score.
With six minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Saints were leading 41-19, a score that would not have been a one-point deficit had that been the final score, but New Orleans’ Blake Grupe made a 26-yard field goal in the final minutes to make the score 44-19. The Cowboys then lost three consecutive points on their final possession, notable in that this was the first time in NFL history that a game ended with a final score of 44-19.
As you can see above, this is the 1,086th final score in NFL history.
This marks the second straight week that a scrimmage has occurred, with the losing team in both games scoring 19 points, an unusual total for an NFL team that usually leads to a scrimmage. The Cowboys scored 19 points on one offensive touchdown by Brandon Aubrey and four field goals.
The only scoring of Week 1 in the NFL came Monday night when the 49ers beat the Jets, 32-19.
This marks the fourth time the Cowboys have been caught up in scourigami since the start of the 2022 season, the last time coming in October 2023 when they beat the Rams 43-20.
The win over Dallas was the Saints’ first scrimmage in four years, having beaten the Vikings 52-33 on Christmas Day in 2020. A lot of history was made in two weeksWith 35 points in the first half against the Cowboys, the Tigers became just the third team in NFL history to score 30 or more points in the first half of their first two games, joining the 1968 Raiders and 2001 Colts.
With two skorigams occurring in two weeks, the 2024 season could surpass the total of the 2023 season, which saw nine skorigams.
