President Vladimir Putin threatened to attack Western countries in a coded message and praised Russia’s “unstoppable” hypersonic missiles.
The Russian leader claimed on Thursday that there is no way to stop the medium-range ballistic missile Oreshnik used in the attack on Ukraine.
He said last week’s attack on Dnipro was a direct response to the Ukrainian military’s attack on Russia with long-range missiles from the United States and Britain.
“Today’s world has no countermeasures or means of interception against such missiles. And I once again emphasize that we will continue testing this modern system,” Putin warned.
He also said, “We believe we have the right to use our weapons against the military installations of countries that allow the use of weapons against our installations.”
He argued that the new missile could carry multiple conventional warheads and could be as destructive as strategic nuclear weapons.
Ukraine’s air defense force said the missile, which has a range of more than 3,400 miles and can carry a nuclear warhead, was fired from Russia’s Astrakhan region on the Caspian Sea.
Despite the Kremlin’s rhetoric, Russian authorities notified the United States of Thursday’s attack 30 minutes before the missile launch.

Russia has fired a senior Ukrainian general for misleading reporting on the progress of the war, Russian media reported, as Defense Minister Andrei Belosov tries to weed out bad commanders.
Russian media cited sources as saying that the commander of the southern units, Colonel Gennady Anashkin, had been removed from command, but there was no official confirmation.
Russian war bloggers have long complained about the operational command around Siversk in eastern Donetsk, where poorly supported Russian troops fought deadly battles with little apparent tactical advantage. He claims that he is being thrown into the
“Only lazy people wouldn’t write about the issues there. All in all, it took about two months for the system to react properly,” Leiber, a respected pro-Russian blogger, said on Telegram.
“Mr. Anashkin was dismissed for false reports to the Seversk direction,” Leiber said. A war correspondent for Russian state television also said Anashkin had been removed from command.
Prominent pro-Russian war blogger Yuri Podlyaka, in a report on the change of command, quoted Belosov as saying, “You can make mistakes, but you cannot lie.”
