ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, Va. – Students in Rockbridge County now have better access to health care at school.
The district has offered dental services for years, but says adding care for both physical and mental health will ease the burden on both students and families.
“We have fewer and fewer doctors and medical professionals in our area who can help kids with these issues, so any opportunity to be able to provide these services in-house, especially during school hours, is a win-win for everyone,” said Rockbridge County Schools Superintendent Philip Thompson.
From health screenings to individual and small group counseling, students can get the care they need.

“I’m from Rockbridge County and have worked as a paramedic in the area for almost 20 years, and in our rural communities, there are many challenges with accessing healthcare, whether it’s transportation barriers or just necessity, and many people don’t have the ability to get healthcare,” said Amanda McComas, a Family Nurse Practitioner at Rockbridge Health Center.
Maury River Middle School and Rockbridge County High School have medical and behavioral health professionals, but services are available to all students in the district.
