In the latest violent incident at Orange County’s Fashion Island mall on Monday night, robbers targeted two men driving a Rolls Royce and a Ferrari, leaving one man with minor injuries, authorities said.
At 11:26 p.m., Newport Beach Police received a report of a robbery involving gunfire near the mall parking lot on Newport Center Drive, according to a police press release.
When officers arrived on scene, they found two men and encountered three would-be robbers, police said.
Lt. Mike Sciavi told KTLA-TV that the men, who were friends, were driving a white Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV and a yellow Ferrari when they were approached by three suspects wearing balaclavas, one of whom was believed to be armed.
Schiavi said the driver of the Rolls-Royce had his watch and wallet stolen, while the driver of the Ferrari tried to flee, KTLA reported. The armed suspect then fired shots at the Ferrari, shattering the car’s windows. The driver likely sustained an ear injury from flying glass, police said. He was not robbed.
The suspects are described as three men wearing balaclavas driving a mid-sized sedan.
Newport Beach Police say the investigation is ongoing and ask anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective K. Markwald at (949) 644-3762 or kmarckwald@nbpd.org.
Three men have been charged in connection with a robbery at the upscale shopping centre two months ago that left a 69-year-old woman visiting from New Zealand dead.
