A series of sophisticated robberies in the Santa Clarita Valley’s Westridge neighborhood revealed criminals were using drones to monitor homes before targeting them, The Signal reported.
High-tech criminals show amazing accuracy
The robbers demonstrated a disturbing level of preparedness, using drones to identify security vulnerabilities before carrying out a quick and efficient infiltration. In one incident, thieves were able to locate and steal a second-floor safe within just 20 minutes, demonstrating their familiarity with the property’s security settings.
“They were in and out quickly,” said Mauricio Garza, a resident whose home was targeted. “I saw this drone flying very low, checking all the backyards, checking everything.”
Residents discover surveillance drone and take action
Noticing suspicious drone activity, Garza tracked one of the devices and followed its operator to a local La Quinta Inn. When confronted by the suspects, they fled the scene. The incident has been reported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department, but no arrests had been made as of Friday night.
Community responses to technology-enabled crimes
Residents are taking matters into their own hands, organizing neighborhood patrols and increasing safety measures.
“We’re really saddened and we’re trying to take matters into our own hands to at least keep our neighbors safe,” Garza explained. “We are on patrol ourselves, checking back gates and alleys.”
DroneXL’s view
The incident highlights growing concerns about drone incidents being used for criminal purposes. Drones have countless positive uses in law enforcement and security, but the potential for misuse for surveillance and criminal reconnaissance is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. This incident highlighted the importance of proper drone detection and implementation of anti-drone measures in residential areas, as well as clear regulations regarding the use of drones in residential areas.
