WEBSTER — Fredonia senior Elizabeth Pucci Schaefer performed a near-perfect eight dives at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Girls Diving Championships.
After the first round cut, she held a modest 4.8 point lead, but in the next round, the future Nittany Lion began to compete and run away. She currently has a score of 367.80 after eight dives, leading Manhasset’s Victoria Wang by 23.25 points, putting her on the verge of winning the state title.
Puig Schaefer will compete in the final three dives in hopes of reaching the top of the podium, but fellow Chautauqua-Cataraugus Athletic Association divers Leah Marsh of Fredonia and Elaina Pitts of Frewsburg scored 304.75 points. She won’t be the only one taking on the challenge, as she made it to the final round. 310.05 and 310.05 respectively.
Marsh is in 15th place, less than a point behind Avery Schumacher in 14th place, and Pitts is in 11th place, just 0.5 points out of the top 10.
