Ukraine crisis – Zelensky – USA: President Zelensky arrives in New York for UN meeting, Ukrinform reports
WASHINGTON – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in New York to attend a session of the United Nations General Assembly, state news agency Ukrinform reported on Sunday.
Zelenskiy’s visit to New York for the U.N. General Assembly coincides with U.S. efforts to prepare a $375 million military aid package for Ukraine, breaking a months-long trend toward smaller packages in response to Kyiv’s military operations.
Zelensky is due to present a “plan for victory” in the war between Ukraine and Russia during separate talks scheduled for Thursday with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Zelenskiy also wants to meet with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has called U.S. aid to Eastern European allies a waste of money and has said he wants Ukraine to win. Trump has said he will probably meet with Zelenskiy this week, but no date has been announced.
Trump will face Harris in the US presidential election on November 5th.
Mr. Zelenskiy has long complained about shortages of weapons, including crucial 155mm artillery shells made at the Scranton plant, concerns that have become more urgent as Russia closely monitors Ukraine’s power grid.
Two U.S. officials told Reuters on Friday the package, due to be announced this week, would include patrol boats, additional munitions for high-mobility rocket artillery, ammunition for 155mm and 105mm guns, spare parts and other weapons.
Officials said the content and size of the package could change in the coming days, when President Biden is expected to sign it.
