The federal government will recognize only two genders, male and female, under an executive order signed Monday by President Donald Trump.
The order would override the Biden administration’s efforts to expand gender identity designations, including on passports.
“As of today, it is the official policy of the United States government going forward that there are only two genders: male and female,” President Trump said in his inaugural address on Monday, making one of his culture war campaign promises. We have taken early steps to make this a reality. .
The order, titled “Protecting Women from Gender Ideological Extremism and Restore Biological Truth to the Federal Government,” states, “Gender cannot be changed and is a fundamental and indisputable reality. It is written that “It is based on.”
The federal government also plans to switch its use of the term “gender” to “sex,” and sex is an “immutable biological classification of an individual,” Trump administration officials told reporters on Monday. .
The executive order states that all government agencies will ensure that official documents, including passports, visas, and Global Entry cards, “accurately reflect the gender of the holder.” Also, departments that operate federal prisons, immigration shelters, rape shelters, and other “intimate spaces” would be directed to protect gay spaces for privacy. Employee records will also be subject to the executive order, as will messages from federal departments.
“The agency will no longer promote gender ideology through communication forms or other messages,” the official said, adding that “federal funds must not be used to advance gender ideology.” It added that grants and contracts would be reviewed to ensure that.
President Trump’s executive order would reverse the Biden administration’s efforts to make Americans’ gender identities more inclusive.
As of 2022, U.S. citizens can now choose “X” as their gender marker on their passports. The State Department says your marker doesn’t have to match the gender on your citizenship documents or photo ID, and you don’t need medical documentation to change your gender.
“We promote freedom, dignity and equality for all people, including LGBTQI+ individuals,” the ministry’s website states. “We demonstrate this commitment to better serve all Americans, regardless of gender identity.”
Later that year, Americans could begin changing their gender identity with the Social Security Administration without providing a doctor’s note. However, the administration said it is considering policy and system updates to support an “X” designation, although Social Security’s record system still requires a male or female designation.
“The Social Security Administration’s Equity Action Plan includes a commitment to reduce administrative burden and ensure that people who identify as gender diverse and transgender have options in the Social Security number card application process.” said Kiroro Kijakazi, acting chief of staff at the time.
