Pope Francis suffers from “bilateral pneumonia” and continues to receive medical care at a Rome hospital, the Vatican announced Tuesday.
“The clinical tests, chest x-rays, and the clinical state of the Holy Father continue to present complicated drawings,” the Vatican said Tuesday. The Pope has a “multibial infection” that has emerged during a recent match against bronchitis and complicates the Pope’s treatment, the Vatican added. “Additional drug therapy” is required to detect pneumonia after chest x-rays.
The 88-year-old Pope is reportedly in a “fair” state, and is said to be eating breakfast, reading newspapers and working in a hospital.
Francis, as a young man, removes part of one lung after a pulmonary infection, and is prone to bronchitis attacks in the winter.
Given his condition, several Vatican events have been cancelled. There is no general audience every week on Wednesdays. It is not clear whether Francis will miss out on Sunday’s noon blessing for the second week in a row.
Vatican news outlets said the Pope “received the Eucharist and alternated between rest, prayer and reading throughout the day.”
