With the new school term just a few weeks away, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is offering some back to school shopping tips and advising parents and children to remain vigilant.
“We urge parents and children to be more vigilant when shopping together,” the JCF said in a statement today.
“Here are some tips/guidelines to enhance your safety.”
1. Stop! Watch! Listen! – When crossing a road, always look around and make sure there is no traffic or that both sides have stopped before crossing the road.
2. Make a Shopping List – Make sure you check the items you need when you go shopping. This will avoid unnecessary expenses and wasting time at stores that you don’t need to visit, especially if you know exactly what you want.
3. Use cards instead of cash – Parents and kids alike should be aware of pickpockets, especially in crowded places. Using cards for purchases is more convenient and offers an added layer of security.
4. Be aware of your surroundings – Look around you from time to time as you walk. Stay away from crowded places. Thieves hide in crowded places.
5. Avoid crowded places – There may be a lot of shoppers in town and in stores at this time of year. If you are taking your children shopping, be sure to keep an eye on where they are at all times.
6. Mind the time – Always shop at a convenient time. Timing is important, especially if you are using public transport. In this case, take the bus instead of a taxi and especially don’t travel alone.
7. Minimize cell phone usage – Do not use your cell phone in crowded places unless it is absolutely necessary.
8. Plan your route – Before you leave home, decide exactly what you need to buy and create a route that will get you to the establishment without getting lost.
9. Call the bookstore beforehand – Ask the staff at your chosen bookstore about prices and availability of books. Some bookstores will even pre-package your books if you send them a book list and they have them in stock. This will reduce the time you spend at the bookstore and the chances of becoming a victim of crime.
