The nation will have a chance to say goodbye in the days leading up to former President Jimmy Carter’s official state funeral on Thursday in Washington, D.C.
Services began Saturday in Georgia, with Carter’s motorcade passing through his hometown of the Plains and stopping briefly at his childhood home. The motorcade then headed to the Georgia State Capitol and then to the Carter Center in Atlanta, where the former president will rest in peace until Tuesday morning.
Mr. Carter will be taken to Washington on Tuesday and is expected to lie in state in court in the Capitol Rotunda before a funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral. Parliament House will be open to the public to pay their respects before the funeral.
President Joe Biden declared Thursday a national day of mourning and plans to deliver a eulogy at his funeral. President-elect Donald Trump is also expected to attend.
Carter will later be buried in the same spot in Plains where his wife, Rosalyn, was buried last year.
