PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – The Peachtree City Special Response Team (SRT) played a key role in a recent operation to safely extract a young woman experiencing mental illness in the nearby city of Tyrone. The incident occurred when Tyrone Police Department officers responded to a situation involving a woman who had climbed onto the roof of her home during a crisis.
After trying to resolve the situation for several hours, officers from Tyrone and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from crisis negotiators from Peachtree City, one of whom, along with a Fayette County firefighter, spent nearly six hours on the hot, black asphalt rooftop enduring temperatures of nearly 100°F trying to convince the woman to get off safely.
Despite their best efforts, it became apparent that the woman had no intention of descending voluntarily, so leadership on scene authorized physical intervention. Peachtree City SRT operators got close enough to the woman near the edge of the roof to devise a rescue plan that allowed them to safely gain control of her.
Rescuers spent another 30 minutes carefully carrying the woman to the roof and lowering a ladder, as she occasionally struggled to free herself. She was safely removed and given immediate medical attention before being transported to a medical facility for further evaluation and treatment.
“The successful resolution of this high-risk situation highlighted the strong relationships between neighboring law enforcement agencies and the importance of specialized training and preparation. The collaboration between Peachtree City SRT, Tyrone Police Department and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office ensured a safe outcome for all involved.”
Officials ask all who knew the family to respect their privacy as they continue their recovery.
