New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye left Sunday’s 25-22 win over the New York Jets with a head injury.
Head coach Jerod Mayo told CBS before halftime that May was initially listed as having a suspected head injury and would not return to the game.
May suffered a blow to the head in the second quarter. Jets linebacker Jamian Sherwood scrambled to chase Maye and was hit from behind, causing Maye to slide, causing helmet-to-helmet contact.
No penalty flag was drawn for this hit.
Maye went to the sideline medical tent after the hit and then to the Patriots’ locker room. Jacoby Brissett took over at quarterback on New England’s next possession.
Maye completed 3 of 6 passes for 23 yards and ran for 46 yards and a touchdown before his injury. The Patriots held a 7-6 lead when he was ejected.
Maye was the No. 3 pick in April’s draft out of North Carolina State and started the season behind Brissett on the depth chart. The Patriots won the first game against the Cincinnati Bengals, but lost 1-4 because Brissett was the starting QB. Maye took over at quarterback and made his first NFL start in Week 6 against the Houston Texans.
In two starts and relief appearances before Sunday’s game against the Jets, Maye had completed 64.1 percent of his passes, 7.1 yards per attempt, five touchdowns and two interceptions. He added 68 rushing yards on 10 carries.
