OpenAI published Elon Musk’s old emails in a blog post on Friday.
The AI company released its version of the timeline of events amid an erupting legal battle with Mr. Musk.
Musk said in a 2015 email that OpenAI’s nonprofit organization did not seem to be a “best fit.”
OpenAI responded to co-founder Elon Musk on Friday with a scathing blog post featuring new legal filings and old emails from the billionaire pushing to commercialize the AI startup.
The email and filing were the latest blow in the legal battle between OpenAI and Musk. Last month, Musk asked a federal court to block OpenAI from moving into a commercial business structure. Last year, Musk sued OpenAI twice to prevent it from adopting a more traditional business structure.
In a legal filing Friday afternoon, OpenAI accused Musk of trying to undermine AI startups while perfecting its competitor, xAI.
The company also detailed its version of the timeline of events in a post titled “Elon Musk wanted OpenAI for profit,” noting that in 2017 Tesla’s CEO “wanted OpenAI for profit.” Not only did we want to, but we actually created it.”
The email contrasts with Musk’s recent public stance against OpenAI’s transition from a nonprofit to a for-profit organization.
Musk did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment.
In one image of an email from November 2015, Musk wrote to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman that the then-nonprofit company’s structure “doesn’t seem optimal,” according to the post. It is said that
OpenAI wrote in a blog post that both the company and Musk agreed in the fall of 2017 that the company’s next step was to become a commercial company. But when Musk failed to get a majority stake, OpenAI accused Musk of walking away and saying the company would do it. “Failure.”
Musk left the OpenAI board in 2018, but his lawyers said he continued to contribute to the company through 2020.
“Now that OpenAI is a leading AI research organization and Mr. Elon runs a competing AI company, he is asking the court to effectively block us from carrying out our mission. “There are,” OpenAI wrote this week.
Last year, Musk announced xAI, a competitor to OpenAI, and later released the Grok chatbot.
OpenAI also released Musk’s private emails in March after he sued OpenAI and Altman.
In a November 2015 email published earlier this year, Musk said the company should start with a commitment to raise $1 billion and promised to cover “whatever no one else offers.” .
OpenAI also accused Musk of wanting the startup to merge with Tesla and become a “cash cow” for the company.
