Ontario Premier says “Canada won’t retreat” after Trump rises
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has fought back against Donald Trump’s increased tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, writing, “Ontario and Canada will not retreat until President Trump’s tariffs are gone forever.”
This is the latest salvo in a fierce trade dispute between the two countries that Canadian leaders have acknowledged as potentially causing deep economic damage. Details are as follows:

Leavitt praised the Washington Post for overhauling the newsroom structure.
“The mainstream media, including the Post, seem to be learning that taking more than half of the countries that support this president doesn’t help the sale of newspapers,” Leavitt said. “That’s not a very good business model.”
The billionaire, the owner of the paper, and the founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, announced a major change in the paper last month, especially to its opinion section. “We intend to write every day to support and defend two pillars of individual freedom and the free market,” Bezos said.
The change has led to massive subscription cancellations and senior staff protests and departures.

When asked if the US was in a recession, spokesperson Caroline Leavitt refused to answer definitively, but said the numbers were “snapshots.”
Wall Street suffered the sharpest decline on Monday, partly due to economic unrest over Trump’s aggressive tariffs with its largest domestic trading partners, Canada, Mexico and China.
She added: “We’re in a period of economic transition,” he denounced Joe Biden of economic failure.
Leavitt highlighted the Trump administration’s “America First” agenda and spoke about “devastating globalization.”

Edward Ahmed Mitchell, deputy director of the US Council of Islamic Relations (CAIR), condemned the “unconstitutional” targeting of Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian student detained by US immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), adding that he is “a supporter of past abusers and abused abusers and American abusers.”
Mitchell issued a statement before Cair, a Muslim advocacy organization, released its annual report on civil rights for American Muslims. “This madness has to end,” Mitchell said.
Cair’s national executive director, Nihad Awad, spoke after Mitchell, entitled Unconstitutional Praise, recorded the most complaints the organization has received so far, recording 8,658 cases in its 30-year history. “This historic level of rising Islamophobia is surprising,” Awad said. He said the majority of the complaints came from Muslims. They said they expressed their opinion on Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank.

Donald Trump is further shaking the already turbulent stock market by double the tariffs on Canada’s steel and aluminum imports and declaring that if US Northern neighbors do not settle in the trade war he has begun, he will take even more dramatic steps. There are no signs that it’s happening, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the 25% extra charge on electricity exports of three people to the US states has infuriated President Trump and that “Canada will not retreat until President Trump’s tariffs are only a great deal.” Meanwhile, Elon Musk has meditated on the need to “eliminate” spending on federal qualifications such as Social Security and Medicare, urging cleanup efforts from the GOP and attacks from Democrats.
Here’s the other thing that’s happening today:
House Republicans are voting in law this afternoon to fund the government until September and to prevent the closure from occurring on Friday. It is unclear whether their scale has the support to succeed.
Democrats have been bothered with issues with support, especially among voters in the Battlegroundhouse district, with new votes from Politico’s discoveries.
JD Vance is at Capitol Hill as Republicans vote for the must-pass spending bill.

As Democrats are looking for ways to regain Congressional control next year, the new internal vote, which will ultimately be the White House, emphasizes what the party should do to regain voter trust in key areas around the country.
Politico obtained the results of a survey by Democrat Group Navigator Research. “The majority of voters in the House district of the battlefield think that Congressional Democrats are “focusing on helping others more than people like me.”
“Only 27% of independents think Democrats are focused on helping them, compared to 55% who say they’re focusing on others,” Politico reports.
Navigator’s findings highlight that the party appears to alienate important voters to restore them to the majority of the home:
What was particularly surprising to Democrats was their findings about the Democrats and voters’ views on their work. Only 44% of those who voted said they believe Democrats respect their work, but even fewer — 39% — said the party’s values were at work. Only 42% of Democrats said they shared values. Meanwhile, the majority — 56% — said Democrats are not looking for workers.
Only 39% believe Democrats have the right priorities.

Republican House Speaker Johnson says Democrats will be responsible for the closure if they oppose the spending bill.
At a press conference earlier today, House Speaker Mike Johnson tried to raise the heat of Democrats poised to vote against his party’s bill to maintain government funds until the end of September.
Democratically opposed to the ongoing resolution (CR) that will leave the shutdown from Friday means that the GOP must resort solely to its own members to pass through the Chamber of Commerce. One lawmaker, Thomas Massey, has already said he will vote no, but it remains unclear whether Republicans have the necessary votes.
“This is the bottom line. If Congressional Democrats refuse to support this clean CR, they will be responsible for all the troops that miss pay, all flight delays due to reduced staffing at the TSA, and all negative consequences that arise from shutting down the government,” Johnson told reporters.
The speaker continued:
There is one team working to fund the government and make sure it’s responsible. And you’ll see another objection to CR, as they’ve now exposed the truth. They are not for federal workers. They are not for anyone. All those who said they would be harmed in the past are by their vote.
They use federal government employees as props. They use Medicaid benefits and social security checks as cudgels. The threat of government shutdowns is used as a kind of attempt to rob the US president of the United States, who has overwhelmingly won the popularity polls, the electoral college of every swing state.

In a statement on the Senate floor, Democrat minority leader Chuck Schumer accused Republicans of laying the foundations for reducing Social Security and Medicare.
“Yesterday afternoon, Elon Musk confirmed that many of us have been warnings for a long time. Republicans are preparing for Social Security and Medicare,” Schumer said.
He said Musk, who leads Donald Trump’s jurisdiction, said he argued that reductions could only be achieved by eliminating waste and fraud.
“That’s an excuse to slash them, but that’s wrong,” Schumer said. He continued:
Mark my words: If Elon Musk and Doge continue their attacks on Social Security – if the president continues his attacks and he does in a union state – sooner or later benefits will be delayed or accidentally stopped. And the political uproars from Americans across the country are immeasurable.

Republicans rush to clear up mask comments on social security cuts, Medicare
Last night, Elon Musk meditated on his desire to “eliminate” spending on federal qualifications such as Social Security and Medicare, urging Republicans to try and downplay the possibility of cutting back on popular benefits programs.
The White House said that masks merely refer to “waste and fraud” in the program, reflecting a similar struggle that GOP lawmakers have made after GOP lawmakers proposed another popular federal program that provides health insurance to poor people and Americans with disabilities.
“The Trump administration will not cut social security, Medicare or Medicaid benefits,” the White House said.
Republican Rep. Mark Alford joined the effort and told CNN:
Look, Elon Musk is a brain with an IQ that I can’t even guess. He is not an artistic language figure, like a politician or a news anchor. When he talks about elimination, I think we are talking about elimination of waste, abuse, fraud. And it’s true that Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security account for about 75% of the budget. It’s a must-have expenditure. You have to find savings there. We do that… we are not going to rule out Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid.

Meanwhile, JD Vance has arrived at the Capitol for the Capitol for shepherds through a short-term government funding bill that would prevent closures from occurring after Friday.
GOP-controlled homes vote for this measure today, but their small majority uncertainly makes its passage. Vance did not answer questions from reporters when he arrived at the Capitol.
