SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City City Council will hold one more public hearing before a final vote on a proposed downtown sports and entertainment district, according to a news release Monday, less than a day after a survey about the project drew criticism on social media.
State lawmakers last week approved Smith Entertainment Group’s plans for the Delta Center neighborhood, but a confidential poll sent to residents sparked criticism online that the plans were misrepresented.
According to screenshots, the text message distributing the survey told respondents “Utah needs your input” and said “local leaders” were partnering with a Utah-based research firm to collect data on local issues.
The city council said in a news release that it was “aware that a survey is being conducted in collaboration with ‘local leaders,'” but added that it has “not been involved” in any research into the proposed sports, entertainment, cultural and convention district.
“We continue to strive to make the best decisions for our community and want to ensure that openness and transparency are central to everything we do as a council,” the statement read. “We remain focused on providing clear, objective information and acting in the best interests of Salt Lake City residents, including upholding the public interest.”
