The west suburban DMV has been remodeled into a one-stop shop designed to cut wait times and get more done in one visit to the counter, according to the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.
The newly renovated DMV+ facility opening Thursday in Melrose Park will consolidate driver and vehicle services, as well as provide business services that previously required a trip to downtown Chicago or Springfield.
Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said this means people won’t have to go from line to line at different DMV stations, including the one at 1903 N. Manheim Road.
“The goal is to get more people in and out faster,” Giannoulias said. “We think this is going to be the new model going forward. We’re reinventing the way we do business across all departments.”
The business, index and personnel services now available in Melrose Park are the first of their kind outside of Chicago and the state capital, allowing clients to receive certified copies of their business records, file for an LLC or register a trademark – some tasks that previously required multiple trips to multiple state offices.
The Melrose Park facility also processes and certifies foreign use documents, provides notary assistance and administers employment testing to current and prospective DMV employees.
Since April, four DMVs across the southern state have been upgraded to one-stop shops for driver and vehicle services, with the Melrose Park DMV being the first in the Chicago area.
In one visit, residents can renew their driver’s license or state-issued identification, apply for a REAL ID, register or renew vehicle stickers, order new license plates, register to vote, become an organ donor and more.
The streamlined setup will allow driver services to have more service stations and appointments available to schedule on ilsos.gov.
