As the Russian government ramps up airstrikes, Ukraine says its air defense authorities have shot down 60 of 93 Russian drones.
A Russian drone targeted Kiev, killing one person and wounding four others, military and civilian officials said, as Russia launched a barrage of fire across the country.
The Ukrainian Air Force announced that its air defense forces have shot down 60 of the 93 Russian drones launched into Ukraine since early Friday morning.
The Russian military has escalated airstrikes across Ukraine in recent days, including a drone strike in central Kiev on New Year’s Day that killed two people.
Kyiv regional governor’s deputy Mykola Kalashnik said a truck driver was killed by debris from the drone during the barrage.
He said the debris also damaged several homes and injured four people, including a 16-year-old boy.
The Ukrainian Air Force announced that 26 other drones were “lost,” citing Ukraine’s use of electronic warfare to guide Russian drones.
Officials said Russian drones targeted nine regions in the country, including Kiev.
Houses and commercial buildings were also damaged in Donetsk region in the east and Chernihiv region in the north, the military added.
On Thursday, the Ukrainian military announced a high-precision attack on a Russian command post in Maryino, Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces still hold territory after a major invasion in August.
The Russian military said its air defense forces shot down four Ukrainian missiles in the area, and the regional governor said the attack damaged a high-rise apartment building and other buildings in an adjacent village.
