There’s no doubt that Ohio State fans are still celebrating, as they should, Monday night’s national championship win over Notre Dame. The No. 8 Buckeyes had an amazing run in the playoffs, defeating No. 9 Tennessee, No. 1 Oregon, No. 5 Texas, and No. 7 Notre Dame. And while the playoff run was impressive, Ohio State was unable to shake off a crushing loss to Michigan on November 30th. In fact, the Michigan Wolverines were one of the hottest topics in the entire College Football Playoff, but they weren’t. Among them.
The loss to Michigan State existed when Ohio State defeated Tennessee on Dec. 21. The loss to Michigan State existed when Ohio State defeated Oregon State on January 1st. The loss to Michigan State existed when Ohio State defeated Texas on Jan. 10. And that loss against Michigan was there when Ohio State beat Notre Dame on Monday night.
No matter how much the Buckeyes accomplished during their playoff run, it was never enough to escape a loss to Michigan.
After all the scarlet and gray confetti rained down on Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Monday night, two ESPN anchors sat on the field and discussed…you guessed it…that loss to Michigan. This is such a big part of the 2024 Ohio State story that even Rece Davis has suggested that the Buckeyes should remove the countdown clock at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center in Columbus. It was about.
“It’s fun when it seems like it means everything until it’s no longer fun,” Davis said. “And knowing he was 67-10 before this playoffs, it’s nonsense that they have to fire him because of Michigan. And that was in their head as well. But, you know, even I have my doubts.” …And I would love to talk to Ryan (Day) at some point in the offseason. They have a whole rivalry thing going on in the Woody Countdown building. Maybe you don’t need to do that. ”
In the days since Monday’s national championship win, the loss to Michigan has continued to be a big part of the discussion. And that’s the harsh reality Buckeye fans are trying to deal with right now. Winning a national championship is great, but it’s not as much fun if you don’t beat your rivals along the way.
For Ohio State, the painful truth is this. That loss to the University of Michigan will always be part of the 2024 championship story.
