The emergency nursing team at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens has been named the recipient of the Emergency Nurses Association’s 2024 Lantern Award for outstanding achievement in leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research achievement. The Lantern Award recognizes emergency department achievements that incorporate evidence-based practice and innovation into emergency care. Through collaboration and teamwork, the department has earned Primary Stroke Center designation, an ACEP-accredited Geriatric Emergency Department and achieved excellence in areas such as early critical care and intervention, emergency care follow-up programs, sepsis management, medication safety, falls prevention, restraint reduction and patient experience. The recognition serves as a visible symbol of the team’s commitment to quality, safety and a healthy work environment, further highlighting the hospital’s dedication to providing the highest standards of health care to the community.
“We are thrilled and honored to receive the prestigious Lantern Award from the Emergency Nurses Association. This award is a testament to the hard work, dedication and innovation of our emergency nursing team,” said Neil J. Moore, MBA, MPA, FACHE, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens.
“We are incredibly pleased and proud that the Emergency Nurses Association has awarded our NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens Emergency Department with the prestigious ENA Lantern Award,” said Natalia Cineas, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, senior vice president and chief nursing officer at NYC Health + Hospitals. “Our Queens nurses play a vital role in providing compassionate, life-saving care while responding to more than 88,000 emergency department visits each year. Queens is one of only 94 emergency departments worldwide to be awarded this prestigious title in 2024, joining our NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan as a 2024 EMA Lantern Award recipient; NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health received the award in 2023. All three of these emergency departments received ENA Lantern Awards for demonstrating exceptional, innovative, evidence-based practice. Queens’ achievement is all the more remarkable given that the emergency department serves an area where many hospitals have closed in recent years, and patient volume in Queens’ emergency departments has more than doubled. We commend Queens nurses for advancing the profession and practice of emergency nursing through leadership, quality and safety improvement, research and advocacy, and applaud this incredible recognition for their commitment to nursing excellence and excellent patient care.”
“We are extremely proud of the emergency nursing team at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens for their extraordinary dedication and commitment to providing the highest standard of care to our community. This prestigious Lantern Award is a testament to their relentless pursuit of excellence and innovation in emergency medicine,” said Dr. Dave Holson, chief medical officer, NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens.
“Earning the prestigious Lantern Award is a testament to the excellence of our nursing team, and this title is a testament to the proactive and innovative practices of our nurses as they continue to expand their roles through research and education. Our nurses, under the guidance of our outstanding Director, Suja Mohan, have been committed to consistently providing high quality, safe care to our community and patients, regardless of the volume of patients in our ED. Our ED nursing team is a truly dynamic, patient-centered, collaborative and cohesive team that is the foundation of our Emergency Department, and I am incredibly proud of what they do every day,” said Dr. Abi Gayle Babulal, chief nursing officer, NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens.
Dr. Dennis Chuang, Chief of Emergency Medicine at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens, also shared his thoughts, saying, “Receiving the Lantern Award reflects the unwavering dedication and collaborative spirit of the entire emergency medicine team at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens. This recognition highlights our commitment to providing safe, quality patient care and creating a supportive, positive work environment for our nursing staff.”
NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens’ Lantern Award will be proudly displayed in the emergency department, and as a recipient, NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens will be recognized in upcoming ENA publications, on the ENA website and at Emergency Nursing 2024, the association’s annual conference, taking place Sept. 4-7 in Las Vegas.
