Notre Dame defeats Penn State on last-minute field goal to advance to College Football Playoff National Championship

Irish kicker Mitch Jeter was the hero, kicking a 41-yard field goal with Notre Dame seconds away from scoring.

Notre Dame 27, Penn State 24

Notre Dame’s Christian Gray made the largest interception in College Football Playoff history when Drew Aller was hit in a critical position.

The Irish would decide the game at the PSU 42 with 33 seconds left.

Irish took a shot, but Penn State’s defense sacked him at a crucial moment and Nitz stopped it.

PSU will be on its own 15-yard line.

PSU stopped Notre Dame, but bailed out the Irish with an illegal hand to the face penalty.

It was a quick three-and-out for Penn State, forcing Notre Dame to drive it back to its 24-yard line with 2:34 left in the game.

With less than 5 minutes left in the game, Ireland tied the score! After a PSU defender slipped, Riley Leonard hit a wide-open Jayden Greathouse for a 54-yard touchdown.

Nicholas Singleton hits the end zone for his third touchdown of the night, giving the Nittany Lions the lead with just under 8 minutes left in the game!

PSU 24, Notre Dame 17

PSU’s Drew Allard floated the ball into the arms of a Notre Dame defender in the end zone, but it all went to waste as the referee threw a flag for pass interference.

Riley Leonard throws his second pick of the game, and it was brutal. Dani Dennis Sutton would jump and the Knights would get it at ND39.

The Nittany Lions tied it on a tough run by Nicholas Singleton from inside the 10. Things are looking better in the Orange Bowl!

PSU 17, Notre Dame 17

Right now, it’s Nitz who is moving the ball at will. After a long pass from Drew Allard to Khalil Dinkins, they crossed midfield and reached the red zone.

The Irish broke the deadlock early in the fourth quarter and it was Jeremiah Love who scored on an incredible effort play from the goal line!

As the third quarter came to a close, the Irish started moving the ball. At the start of the fourth quarter, they are 3rd and 2nd in the PSU 35.

This will give you a feel for the theme. After the first goal in the second half, both defenses lost some steam.

Notre Dame had 4 minutes and 26 seconds left in the third quarter, making it their own 28th minute start.

And now we’re exchanging punts. PSU punt returner Zion Tracy didn’t call for a fair catch and completely exploded immediately after catching the ball, forcing Penn State to return it to its own 15-yard line.

The momentum has changed. Notre Dame would push PSU on its first possession of the second half and have a chance to get the ball back and take its first lead of the game.

Well, the Irish are now wide awake! They took the opening possession of the second half 75 yards in eight plays and just scored on a short run by Riley Leonard.
