CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – A nonprofit organization is focused on combining sports and entrepreneurship to teach young people the business world.
Entrepreneur Centers 4 Youth began in 2013, but this is their third year hosting entrepreneurs at athletes and sports fundraisers.
The day was packed with speakers, vendors, sports clinics and a 3-on-3 basketball tournament.
One EC Youth director says it’s important to help shape the future of our generation.
“We want them to know there are opportunities here. There are a lot of opportunities. We just want to make sure they can take advantage of them,” board member Trevino Reed said.
Pleshette Grant, CEO and founder of EC Youth, says her drive and passion for the work is simple.
“Well, I love working with young people. Young people love money. So I know a lot of young people who want to be their own business owners. So I want them to know what to do with money when they get it,” Grant said.
Her son, Evan Grant, has been a member of the program since its inception and shared why it’s important to him.
“So I want you to make sure you know that in the long run, everything you do in that moment is going to pay off,” he said.
He also said he learned from his own experiences as a college athlete.
“I’ve been playing baseball and other sports since I was little, so I want to make sure I’ve been doing it right all this time and feel like I can actually do something after I’m done playing.”
The event took place at Burke High School from 2 to 6 p.m.
The next event will be held in October and will focus on culinary skills and art, Grant said.
