BROCKPORT — It’s been a while since Climber/Sherman/Panama put together a complete game.
It’s no exaggeration to say the Wolfpack did it that Friday night.
Quarterback Tate Catanese found all his weapons, Clymer/Sherman/Panama controlled the clock with the running game, and the Wolfpack defense forced four turnovers down the stretch in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association class. They defeated Avon 48-14. D-Far West Regional at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium, State University of New York at Brockport.
“This week was key to how well we got,” Catanese said after the game. “They didn’t do anything we haven’t seen before, so it’s really just a matter of perfecting our technique and having a good week of practice.”
The Section VI champions’ next game is the Western semifinal against Section III’s Dolgeville next Friday night at Vestal High School outside Binghamton.
“We scouted Tioga. We knew we were going to see them,” Clymer/Sherman/Panama defensive coordinator Chris Payne said. “But whoever stands in our way, we will deal with it.”
On a cold, rainy Friday night, Catanese was in control at Bob Boozer Field. The senior completed 15-of-20 for 224 yards and two touchdowns through the air, and added 73 yards on 17 carries and three touchdowns on the ground, leading Wolf The Pack advanced to the state semifinals for the second year in a row. Last year, they lost to eventual state champion Tioga.
“We made it to the state semifinals last year, so I definitely wanted to go back,” senior wide receiver Bryce Hinsdale said. “…All the players worked really hard, so I’m really happy to be back here.”
After Carter Brink nearly ran for a touchdown on the opening kickoff, Clymer/Sherman/Panama advanced 58 yards in 12 plays to take a 6-0 lead. Catanese connected with senior Alex Barmore on a drive for a 20-yard gain and senior Hinsdale for a 22-yard touchdown, but a penalty was called back and he nearly threw an interception, his only one of the night before. It was a mistake. He scored on a fourth-down QB sneak from the 1-yard line.
“We were really focused on being sharp on the first possession, and that was a big emphasis this week,” Clymer/Sherman/Panama head coach Ty Harper said. “We were a little sloppy the last few weeks when we first got the ball, so we wanted to fix that.”
The Wolfpack went up 14-0 on their first possession of the second quarter. On the fourth play of the drive, a first down from the Avon 42-yard line, Catanese rolled to his right and was about to take off on his own when Brink slipped behind the River Hawks defense and Catanese found him and made a jumping catch. in the end zone.
“He made a post corner on that one, but he just made it deep and obviously no one was covering him,” Catanese said of Brink. “I was going to run it, but I saw his hand at the last moment and gave him a chance.”
Avon gained 75 yards in seven plays, with two 24-yard runs by senior running back Wesley Farley and senior wide receiver-turned-quarterback Kalman Dolgos key to whether they could decide the game on their next drive. It looked like. On second down from the Wolfpack 15-yard line, Dolgos found an open Brayden Bolsing for a touchdown to make it 14-7.
When Catanese scored on another 1-yard run with 1:40 left in the second quarter, it looked like Clymer/Sherman/Panama would go into halftime with a 21-7 lead. However, Avon tried to put together a quick scoring drive and punted the ball back to the Wolfpack after just 39 seconds.
Clymer/Sherman/Panama made it 28-7 after four throws when Catanese connected with Brink again, this time from 14 yards out, with 14 seconds left in the first half. The key play on the drive was a 14-yard completion to Hinsdale, who had seven receptions in the first 24 minutes.
“Before the first half, I thought that was huge, too,” Harper said. “Our defense did a great job and we were able to go three-and-out and score again before the half.”
“I think it’s because of the chemistry,” Hinsdale said, finishing with eight catches, seven catches shy of Bruce Williams’ state record for career receptions with 227. “Alex Barmore, Carter Brink, myself, and Tate Catanese have been playing together since we were midgets. We know where each other is at any given time. Tate is one of the best in Western New York. We all trust Tate because he’s one of our quarterbacks.”
Avon fumbled twice in the first five plays from scrimmage of the second half, but the Wolfpack got touchdown runs of 2 yards from Barmore and 7 yards from Catanese, increasing the lead to 42-7 and effectively ending the game. is over.
“We looked at the film and told them that a lot of times they miss snaps and have bad results, but they were so good that they missed the snap and ran 80 yards. ” Payne said. “…Five plays, two turnovers and we scored a couple of times…That’s what we envisioned coming out of the first half.”
Despite playing Avon, an undefeated team ranked No. 2 in the New York State Sportswriters Association, on Friday, Clymer/Sherman/Panama will defeat Section 4 champion Delaware Academy next Friday in Cicero, 28-16. They are likely to face a tougher test against Dolgeville, whom they defeated. -North Syracuse High School.
“It’s a different opponent. It’s probably a team that we’re not very familiar with. I’m sure Coach Payne will be texting me at 5 a.m. Sunday morning asking if[the film]is still out,” Harper said. Ta. “… They have a great team. … We need to prepare for a great week. It will definitely be another battle.”
Notes: Travis Owens had 11 carries for 63 yards and one touchdown for Clymer/Sherman/Panama. … Hinsdale had eight catches for 112 yards and Brink had four catches for 57 yards and two touchdowns. … On the Wolfpack defense, Colin Ryan and Dalton Richter each had seven tackles. Andrew Spiethman, Kolten Rhodes and Noah Skarzenski each recovered a fumble. Then Gavin Birchanowski intercepted the pass.
