According to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, the New England Patriots are “slightly selling” on linebacker Matthew Judon, who was provided the following information by NFL Live:
“As for Judon, I’d say the Patriots are at least listening to trade offers. They’ve lightly touted him and made it clear to the NFL, ‘If you want to trade for him, we’ll listen.’ But I’d also say there hasn’t been much interest from the Patriots to actually get any kind of deal done.”
“Also, the Patriots haven’t raised or re-offered Judon anything since their initial offer before training camp, so I don’t necessarily feel there’s any urgency to bring him back to practice. I don’t think there’s anything imminent, and frankly, I feel like unless a team steps up and makes a trade offer, he’s likely going to have to play out this season on this $6.5 million contract.”
Judon, standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 270 pounds, is a ninth-year veteran out of Grand Valley State University. The 31-year-old recorded 28 sacks in the 2021 and 2022 seasons and has 66.5 career sacks, including four Pro Bowl appearances. Unfortunately, a torn right biceps ended Judon’s season after just four weeks last year.
Judon has one season remaining on his current contract, which pays him a base salary of $6.5 million (with a cap hit of $14,675,850, according to Over the Cap), and he has openly told reporters he believes his market value is higher than that base salary.
“The best player sets the market and everyone else follows until the next player opts out of their contract. I was injured all last season so my market isn’t there, but I don’t think it’s $650. [million]” Judon said (via Matt Gegan of WBZ News ).
