Deion Sanders is reportedly set to become the Dallas Cowboys’ next head coach.
NFL insider Ed Werder reported Thursday that Sanders was told by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones that he “almost certainly would accept the job” if offered. Werder noted that those around the Hall of Famer are “encouraging him to pursue it.”
What’s more, Mr. Jones is also apparently “obsessed with the idea.”
This comes after Sanders previously talked about the possibility, saying, “It would be really nice and interesting to hear from Jerry Jones,” according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. “I love Jerry and I believe in Jerry. Once you get off the phone and process it and think about it, it’s interesting. But I love Boulder and our team, our coaches, our student body. , I love everything about community.”
Expressing love for the current position didn’t necessarily mean no.
The timing of Sanders leaving Colorado after two seasons would make some sense since his son, Shedur, is scheduled to enter the NFL in the upcoming draft. Additionally, Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter is also expected to be one of the first prospects taken on draft day.
It may be the end of the momentum he built in just two seasons with the Buffaloes, but the Cowboys head coach has one of the most high-profile jobs in the sport, and just so happens to be in the same offseason as his son. You can get that job. to leave school.
Sanders also has an obvious connection to Dallas, as he played with the team for five seasons from 1995 to 1999. He helped the Cowboys win the Lombardi Trophy and was named All-Pro in four of those seasons.
If Sanders were to take over, it’s easy to assume that he would like to be traded to the Cowboys to be in position to draft Shedul. Besides the obvious personal connection, it would also mean starting with a new head coach and quarterback on the same schedule as the franchise looks to put a disappointing 2024 season in the rearview mirror.
But Schefter appeared on Thursday’s episode of “The Get Up” (around 5:30 p.m.) and reported that Sanders is “excited to go to Dallas and coach Dak Prescott.”
The Cowboys went 12-5 in each of the past three seasons. Prescott stayed healthy from 2021 to 2023, so even if the team is still waiting, coaching candidates are willing to go with the veteran quarterback. It’s not too surprising that they would work together as a No. 4 under center in the postseason.
Sanders will likely take over as the next head coach.
