Week 8 of the regular season was packed, but Jaden Daniels led the Washington Commanders to a miraculous victory over the Chicago Bears with a play that will undoubtedly go down as the play of the year.
But other than a Hail Mary, multiple starting quarterbacks suffered injuries across the league on Sunday. Week 8 is over, and we’ve got the latest news, injury updates, and more from across the NFL.
Packers QB Jordan Love suffers from groin strain
Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love suffered a groin strain in Sunday’s win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to NFL Network.
The report cites an MRI that Love underwent on Monday to assess the injury. He will receive treatment this week and is expected to play in next Sunday’s NFC North showdown with the Detroit Lions, according to reports.
The prognosis comes as good news for Green Bay, a day after head coach Matt LaFleur expressed a “high level of concern” about the quarterback’s health.
Patriots QB Drake Maye ejected after being hit in the head
Patriots quarterback Drake Maye left the team’s win over the New York Jets early Sunday afternoon after taking a shot to the head.
Jets linebacker Jamian Sherwood had helmet-to-helmet contact with Maye from behind as Maye slipped in a scramble. No penalty was called for Sherwood, but May headed to the medical tent and missed the rest of the game with a head injury. Jacoby Brissett replaced him and led the Patriots to a 25-22 victory.
Maye is currently receiving treatment for a concussion and it is unclear when he will be able to return to the Patriots. They play the Tennessee Titans next week. If Maye doesn’t clear protocols in time, Brissett will likely start. Brissett was the Patriots’ starting quarterback at the beginning of the season, but Maye replaced him earlier this month.
Stefon Diggs diagnosed with knee injury
Houston Texans wide receiver Stefon Diggs went down with a non-contact knee injury during Sunday afternoon’s close victory over the Colts.
Diggs’ right knee buckled awkwardly as he landed while running his second-half route, causing him to collapse to the turf in pain and eventually walk to the locker room. He did not return and is currently under evaluation. The details of his knee injury have not yet been revealed, but his condition does not seem to be good.
Diggs had a team-high five catches for 81 yards in downtime. The rest of the week is short, as the Texans also play the New York Jets on Thursday night.

Anthony Richardson is doubtful to start next week
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is off to a rough start in his second NFL season.
He may have lost his job following his performance in Sunday’s loss to the Houston Texans.
Head coach Shane Steichen was asked twice on Monday whether Richardson was still the Colts’ starting quarterback.
“Right now, today, he is,” Steichen said.
Steichen was then asked to clarify whether Richardson will start next Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.
“We are evaluating,” Steichen replied.

Will Christian McCaffrey return soon?
Christian McCaffrey’s return could be right around the corner. The San Francisco 49ers’ plan is for McCaffrey to start practicing next Monday, as long as he responds well this week during the team’s bye week.
McCaffrey is dealing with Achilles and calf injuries and has yet to play this fall. It is unclear whether he will be available for the Nov. 10 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but this is likely the closest he will be to playing this season.
“It would be great to have him back,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said.

According to Matt Eberflus, Bears cornerback Tyrik Stevenson played defense against Noah Brown on a Hail Mary.
Chicago Bears cornerback Tyrik Stevenson apologized to his teammates Sunday after a costly mistake led to a last-minute loss. Bears coach Matt Eberflus told reporters Monday that Stephenson apologized during a team meeting that morning.
The Washington Commanders executed a Hail Mary with zero time left, shocking Chicago and winning 18-15. Stephenson, teasing Washington fans while the ball was already in play, missed coverage and accidentally tipped the ball into the hands of commanding receiver Noah Brown.
Eberflus said Stephenson was supposed to be defending Brown, but he lost focus and was ejected. Eberflus said Stevenson took full responsibility for his role in the loss when he spoke to his teammates.

National Tight Ends Day became a real holiday from week 8
Every year we hear about National Tight Ends Day. It’s a “day off” created by 49ers tight end George Kittle in honor of an undervalued position. Just like a forwarded email from an elderly relative that mentions a holiday, it’s not real either.
But on Sunday, Week 8 of the 2024 season, National Tight Ends Day became a real holiday. The tight ends had 177 total receptions, the most by a tight end in a single day in NFL history. Those receptions amounted to 1,965 receiving yards and included 16 touchdowns.
Was the increase in TE action just a happy coincidence? Or did each team receive a memo from the commissioner’s office reminding them about National Tight End Day, leading to a burst of great TE play on the chosen day? Was it supposed to be done?
I don’t understand. We may never know. Perhaps next year’s National Austerity Day will be on a regular Sunday. Perhaps this past Sunday was a once-in-a-lifetime array of stars and planets that brought tight ends to the forefront and highlighted their usefulness and usefulness in a variety of football situations.
No matter what happens, we will always have memories.
