Week 2 of the 2024 season will be a week when San Francisco 49ers guard Christian McCaffrey will not play.
McCaffrey, who missed last week’s game against the New York Jets, was placed on injured reserve and will miss at least the next four games while he recovers from Achilles tendinitis and calf strain, according to multiple media reports.
On Friday, it was determined that the injury would rule McCaffrey out for San Francisco’s Week 2 game against the Minnesota Vikings. During his press conference that same day, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that he was considering placing McCaffrey on injured reserve, adding that McCaffrey had been in severe pain during practice on Thursday.
“The pain has been on and off, but it was at its worst (Thursday) so that’s something we’ll talk about over the next 24 hours,” Shanahan said.
The earliest McCaffrey can return to the 49ers is in Week 6 against the Seattle Seahawks.
Bengals WR Tee Higgins says he’s not faking injury
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins missed Week 1 with a hamstring injury, but some fans believe Higgins’ absence in the loss to the New England Patriots had to do with unhappiness with his contract situation.
That couldn’t be further from the truth, Higgins said.
“I don’t understand why fans would think I’m faking an injury because I’m overdue for a contract extension,” Higgins told ESPN. “I don’t understand why fans would think I’m faking an injury. I don’t understand it.”
Higgins did not practice on Friday, marking the third consecutive day he has been off the field, and is considered questionable for Week 2.
“I want to go out there and give my teammates 100 percent Tee Higgins effort, you know what I mean?,” Higgins told ESPN. “I don’t want to just half-ass it at 50 percent effort just to have a presence on the field.”
AJ Brown questionable for Monday night
AJ Brown has been designated questionable for Monday night’s game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons, with the wide receiver struggling with a hamstring injury this week.
“There was a little bit of tension in (Friday’s) practice,” coach Nick Sirianni said, adding that the team will limit Brown in Saturday’s practice.
